Is It Time for a High Protein Diet?

Time Tape MeasureNow may be time to consider a diet high in protein if you have had trouble with weight management or if your active lifestyle demands lean energy. Protein is a basic building block of the human body and the major component of cells including those in bone and muscle. In our bodies it makes up roughly 16 percent of our total body weight and is used for growth and to combat infections by increasing immunity. It is an element that is needed throughout the life of our bodies, and now there is research that indicates it can help us control weight.

Dieting trends for weight control have seen a shift from low-carb diets to high-protein diets in recent years. According to Donald Layman, PhD, professor at the University of Illinois, says “diets higher in protein [and] moderate in carbs, along with a lifestyle of regular exercise have an excellent potential to reduce blood lipids [and] maintain lean tissue while burning fat for fuel without dieters being sidetracked with constant hunger”. High protein diets are also incorporated by athletes whose higher activity levels demand energy from protein to be used in competition and not stored because our bodies do not store protein like is stores fat and glucose.

The standard method used by nutritionists to estimate our minimum daily protein requirement is to multiply the body weight in kilograms by .8, or weight in pounds by .37. This is the number of grams of protein that should be the daily minimum. According to this method, a person weighing 150 lbs. should eat 55 grams of protein per day, a 200-pound person should get 74 grams, and a 250-pound person, 92 grams. You could avoid this complication and just take in more than the minimal amount.
